We apply the latest numerical modelling techniques to support our detailed knowledge of coastal and oceanic processes. We specialise in hydrodynamics, sediment transport and water quality assessments and modelling studies.

Alex Goater PhD BSc (hons) is the Director of Forth Coastal Ltd.
Alex has worked for over 10 years delivering numerical modelling studies and expert advice to the engineering sector, after completing a PhD at University of Bristol developing reduced order models of sediment transport and density flows with Prof. Andrew Hogg. He also worked for 4 years in Credit Risk modelling, analysing big data to determine customer trends and risks for TSB Bank PLC.
Alex started Forth Coastal Ltd in 2026. Forth Coastal is an ethical, environmental and fully transparent business. Our fees are based on a fixed hourly rate, revised annually. How our rates are constructed (including overheads and profits) can be provided on request. We do not adjust our hourly rate for different clients – we value all our clients the same, whether you are a public or private sector organisation, in the UK or overseas. We pay our staff industry competitive salaries and do not attempt to avoid tax through dividends or tax breaks.
We use open-source software and Open Access journals – science is for everyone and there should be no financial barriers to access.
We support local businesses in our home town of South Queensferry, including sourcing all IT hardware second hand from Forth IT Recycling and accountancy support from Diamond Financial.

Numerical modelling
We are experts at modelling hydrodynamics, sediment transport and water quality using the TELEMAC finite element software suite. TELEMAC is open-source software suitable for modelling 2D and 3D hydrodynamics, sediment transport and water quality.
Environmental assessments
We have experience of supporting numerous environmental assessments from scoping to delivery phases, including baseline characterisation and assessment of potential impacts of a development. We use a range of site visits, literature reviews and numerical modelling to support these assessments.
Engineering design
Our expertise has been used to inform the design of ports, marinas, pontoons, reclamations, dredged channels, breakwaters, beaches, managed realignment sites, outfalls and intakes.
